WORD - STORY - DICE

Purpose:

The students get to practice and improve reading the th-/ ng-/ ing-/ and  sight- words from the book and seeing them in context.

Material:

  • dice, list with words

Activity:

This is a partner activity. Each child throws the die twice and then reads the three words, appointed for the number, to their partner. Together they chose one word of the three, write the chosen 4 words down and create a short story out of the 4 words.

(“Phase 3 'sh' Phoneme Roll and Read Mat,”2015)

Differentiation:

If the students have difficulties reading they can just sound out the phonemes of the words and let their partner read out the whole word so they can choose which one they want to pick.

The students can also write the sentence as a challenge or try to combine more than the 4 words from the list, in the sentence.

FINN’S FEELINGS REVISITED

This activity is to spread out over a period of a week. The teacher can decide how much to read per lesson.

Purpose:

The purpose of revisiting the book is for the learners to get an opportunity to apply what they have learnt in phonics in the past three weeks. Therefore, this activity encompasses phonemes, morphemes and sight words. The first time, the book was read by the teacher and now the teacher will assign some passages of the book to the learners. This activity helps to develop fluency skills.

Material:

Copies of the book

Activity:

  1. Hand out copies of the book to the students.

  2. Read the book with the learners

  3. Ask questions to create discussions

Differentiation:

  • Give the learners a choice to either read the entire sentence or sound out the phonemes.

  • Assign the passages according to their levels, based on what you observed in the prior weeks.
